Clear whey: the technical challenges behind the successful ingredient

Clear whey is one of the most successful developments in the recent history of whey protein ingredients. It has taken the protein quality of WPI and placed it into a format that feels lighter, more refreshing and easier to consume. Instead of the traditional chocolate, vanilla, banana and coffee profiles associated with milky protein shakes, clear whey created a new base for fruity, acidic and refreshing flavour systems.

That shift matters. It gave sports and active nutrition brands a different way to formulate with whey protein and helped make high protein drinks feel less heavy and more suitable for everyday use. For the consumer, clear whey can look simple: a light, juice-like protein drink. For the manufacturer, the technical reality is more demanding.
